Words of Interest - CHARIDEE

This little gem appears to have been gained in the switch from Chambers to Collins. I should not really have needed to check...

CHARIDEE: charity as pronounced in a mid-Atlantic accent

It is the start of a very slippery slope if we start getting words that are just based on how they are pronounced in certain cases. However, I must admit that I can hear this one ringing loud and clear in my head, and I am cringing as I think of it.

what about the scottish naething, ch, etc?

I don't think naething is in the same league as charidee. Robert Burns will be making a ghost appearance, and he's doing it for charidee...

Would you be allowed Highheidyin-is Scottish dialect acceptable?

Unfortunately highheidyin has not made it in to the dictionary of choice. And as for lowheidyin I claim a googlewhack for it as your blog is the sole hit I got, except the rules probably mean it is invalid 'cos you made the word up. Of course now that I have quoted it it is probably no longer a googlewhack in any case...

But language is all about making words up-that is how it develops and
enrichens (another made up word!)Highheidyin has been around since Burns was smashed at the Black Bull and should be in any dictionary of choice

I am not an expert on such matters but believe any new word has to have a certain take-up rate and make it into print in certain publications to be considered in common usage and therefore eligible for dictionary inclusion. Soccer a.m. (that the other half insists on watching) tried this with bouncebackability.
I believe Iceland is very anti diluting or enriching, depending on your point of view, their language. I was told their word for telephone is 'words that fly across the air' or some such description.
